ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS 

 

The Cherokee Nation Education Corporation (CNEC) is pleased to announce scholarship winners for the 2009 - 2010 academic school year. CNEC awarded scholarships to 17 high school students and 6 university students. Awards are based on special criteria that includes: Academic Achievement (Grade Point Average, ACT/SAT Score), Financial Need, Participation in Cultural and Community Activities, Future Academic Area of Study, and Future Plans to Work with Cherokee People.

 

The 2009-2010 CNEC scholarship awardees are:

Nell D. Brown Memorial Award : Julie Reed of Chapel Hill, North Carolina for doctoral study in the field of American Indian History and Candessa Tehee Morgan of Ada, OK for doctoral study in language revitalization.

 

Harold “Jiggs” Phillips Memorial Award: Jesse Long, Westville High School who will attend Northeastern State University in English Education and Andrew Newberry, Stilwell High School will attend Southwest Baptist University in Pastoral Ministry. 

 

Red Clay Award: Corey Still, Sequoyah High School, will attend University of Oklahoma in Native American Studies/Cherokee Language; Chloe Craig, Owasso High School, will attend University of Oklahoma in Native American Studies; Stacy Rutherford, Inola High School, will attend Oklahoma State University in Nursing; Kellea Hampton, Grove High School will attend Allen County Community College in Chemistry/Biology. 

 

James R. Upton Memorial Award:  Shayne Boyd, Sequoyah High School, will attend the US Air Force Academy and Corey Still, Sequoyah High School who will attend the University of Oklahoma in Native American Studies.

 

John Shurr Journalism Award:  Tesnia Jackson, Alexandria, Ohio attending Ball State University in journalism.

 

Cherokee Nation Tribal Council Award: Alexander Anderson, Warr Acres, Ok will attend Oklahoma State University in Architectural Engineering; Adam Carlton, Dallas, TX, will attend Cornell University in Premedicine; Kristen Harbarger, Gentry Arkansas, will attend Oklahoma Baptist University, in Business Accounting; Cole Haskins, Tulsa, OK will attend University in Oklahoma in Premedicine – Microbiology; Kelly Witt, Highlands Ranch, CO will attend Colorado State University in Interior Design and Business;  and Branden Morris, Choctaw, OK will attend Oklahoma State University in Mechanical Engineering.

 

CNEC is a not-for-profit corporation chartered by the Cherokee Nation that promotes educational opportunities for tribal members and revitalization of the language, culture and history of Cherokee people.

 

Its board, appointed by the Principal Chief and confirmed by the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council is composed of individuals who represent the mission of the organization.

They are: Kimberlie Gilliland - President, Dr. Marilyn Watt – Vice President, Dr. Shelley Butler-Allen – Secretary-Treasurer and directors are Benny Smith, Patsy Edgar, and Deacon Turner. Honorary CNEC Directors are: Brad Carson, Wilma Mankiller and Dr. Duane King.
